Hindu marriage biodata format
A Hindu marriage biodata follows the usual order (name and photo, then personal, family and contact details) and adds what families use to match horoscopes: the exact time and place of birth, gotra, rashi, nakshatra and manglik status.
The maker starts with all of these fields. Fill in the ones your family uses and leave the rest empty: empty fields are never printed. If you have a kundli, it can go on a second page, shown whole.

Details most Hindu families include
- Date, time and place of birth
- Needed to make or check the kundli. Write the exact time with am or pm, and the town of birth rather than just the state. A difference of a few minutes can change the chart.
- Gotra
- Your paternal lineage. Many communities avoid marriage within the same gotra (sagotra), and some also check the mother's gotra, so listing it saves both families time.
- Rashi and nakshatra
- Your moon sign and your birth star, one of 27. South Indian biodatas often call these rasi and star, or natchathiram in Tamil.
- Manglik
- Whether Mars sits in certain houses of the birth chart. Write Yes, No or Anshik (partial), as your astrologer describes it. Many families look for a manglik partner for a manglik bride or groom.
- Caste and sub-caste
- Include them if your family considers them for a match. If not, leave them empty, or write “caste no bar” in your partner expectations.
- Kuldevta or kuldevi
- The family deity. Some families like to know it; add it as your own field in personal or family details.
The same details, different names across India
Families in different regions call these details by different names. Rename a field to the word your family uses.
- Tamil
- Rasi, natchathiram (star) and gothram; many Tamil biodatas also list dosham, such as sevvai dosham, instead of manglik.
- Telugu and Kannada
- Rasi, nakshatram and gotram. Telugu families often add the family surname and native district.
- Bengali
- Rashi, nakshatra, gotra and gan (dev, manushya or rakshas), with the family's ancestral home (desh).
- Gujarati and Marathi
- Rashi, nakshatra and nadi, often with the family's kuldevi or kuldaivat.
How kundli matching uses these details
Most families in North and West India match horoscopes with the Ashtakoot system, often called gun milan. It compares eight factors and gives a score out of 36 gunas. A score of 18 or more is generally considered acceptable, and higher scores are seen as better matches.
Two factors carry the most weight: Nadi, worth 8 points, and Bhakoot, worth 7. A zero in either is called Nadi dosha or Bhakoot dosha, and families usually ask their astrologer whether other factors cancel it.
In South India many families use the ten poruthams instead. Whichever system yours follows, the astrologer needs the exact date, time and place of birth, so take care to write those correctly.
Adding your kundli
Switch on the second page in the maker and add a clear photo or scan of your kundli (janam patri). It is shown whole and never cropped, so the chart stays readable when it is printed or zoomed on a phone.
If your kundli came as a PDF from an astrologer, take a screenshot of the chart page and add that. The second page can also hold up to two more photos of you, and any section you move there, such as your partner expectations.
The line at the top
Most Hindu biodatas open with ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥. You can also choose ॐ or ॥ श्री ॥, or type your own line, such as the name of your family deity. In the South, lines like ॥ श्री वेङ्कटेश्वराय नमः ॥ are common.

Questions
What is the format of a Hindu marriage biodata?
A line such as ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥ at the top, then name and photo, personal details with birth time and place, gotra, rashi, nakshatra and manglik status, family details, a few lines about you, and contact details.
How many gunas should match?
In the Ashtakoot system, 18 or more out of 36 is generally considered acceptable. Families usually confirm the match, and any doshas, with their own astrologer.
What does anshik manglik mean?
Partially manglik: the placement of Mars is considered mild, or reduced by other factors in the chart. Write it as your astrologer describes it.
Can I make a Hindu biodata without kundli details?
Yes. Many families match on education, family and values alone. Leave the horoscope fields empty and they will not appear on the biodata.
Should I include my gotra?
If your family follows gotra rules, yes. Many communities avoid marriage within the same gotra, so mentioning it up front saves both families time.
Where do I add my kundli?
Switch on the second page in the maker and add a photo or screenshot of your kundli. It is shown whole, never cropped.
Can I make it in Hindi?
Yes. Choose हिन्दी in the maker and every heading switches to Hindi. You can type the details in Hindi or English.
What is sevvai dosham?
The Tamil name for the same Mars placement that North India calls manglik. Rename the Manglik field to Dosham if your family uses that word.
