There are 12 rashis, from Mesh to Meen. Your rashi is your moon sign: the sign the moon was in when you were born, as your kundli shows it. On a marriage biodata it goes next to the nakshatra, because families use both when they match kundlis.
The table gives each rashi as families write it in English and in Hindi, the Western sign that covers the same stretch of sky, its ruling planet, the nakshatras inside it, and its nine name letters.

Marathi uses the same names, except तूळ for Tula, and calls a rashi रास. The name letters come from the padas of the nakshatras in each rashi; family lists sometimes differ by a letter.
Your rashi is not your sun sign
Newspaper horoscopes use your sun sign, which depends only on your date of birth: anyone born between about 21 March and 19 April is Aries. Your rashi is worked out another way. It is the sign the moon was in, not the sun, and Indian astrology measures the signs against the fixed stars, which shifts them about 24 degrees from the Western ones.
So a person who is Leo in the newspaper can have any of the 12 rashis. The moon moves into the next sign about every two and a quarter days, which is why you need the time of birth as well as the date to be sure of yours.
Birth rashi and name rashi
- Janma rashi (birth rashi)
- The sign the moon was in at the moment you were born, from your kundli. This is the rashi to write on a marriage biodata, and the one kundli matching uses.
- Naam rashi (name rashi)
- The rashi whose name letters include the first syllable of your name. Families sometimes go by it when no one knows the birth time, but it is a stand-in, and it often differs from the birth rashi.
Reading your rashi from a kundli
- 1Find the moon in the chart. It is marked चं, Ch or Mo.
- 2In a North Indian chart, the diamond-shaped one, each house has a number from 1 to 12. The number in the moon's house is your rashi, counting Mesh as 1, so a 6 means Kanya.
- 3In a South Indian chart, the square one, each rashi always sits in the same box, with Meen in the top left corner. The box the moon is in is your rashi.
- 4Most kundlis also print the rashi in words near the top, along with the nakshatra and lagna. Lagna is the rising sign, a different thing; the biodata asks for the moon's rashi.
How the rashi is used in matching
Guna milan scores two kundlis out of 36 on eight counts. Four of the counts come from the two people's rashis and their lords: varna (1 point), vashya (2), graha maitri (5) and bhakoot (7), 15 points in all. The other four come from the nakshatras.
Bhakoot looks at how far apart the two rashis are, counting around the 12. Graha maitri compares their lords, so two rashis ruled by friendly planets score well together. This is why a family that matches kundlis wants both the rashi and the nakshatra on your biodata.

Rashi sits with the other personal details on our form, just before nakshatra. When you switch your biodata to Hindi the heading reads राशि, and in Marathi रास, so you only type the name itself. Write it in the same script as the rest of your details, and leave it out if your family doesn't match kundlis.
Questions
What is my rashi by date of birth?
The date isn't enough on its own, because the moon moves to the next rashi every two days or so. With your date, time and place of birth, your kundli or a panchang gives your rashi. The sign you get from the date alone is your sun sign, a different thing.
Is rashi the same as a zodiac sign?
Not quite. Each rashi covers the same stretch of sky as a Western sign, Mesh with Aries and so on, but your rashi is where the moon was when you were born, and newspaper signs are where the sun was. For most people the two are different.
What is rashi called in Marathi?
रास. Marathi uses the same rashi names as Hindi, except तूळ for Tula, so a Marathi biodata reads, for example, रास: कन्या.
What is naam rashi?
The rashi that matches the first syllable of your name, using the name letters in the table. It is used when the birth time isn't known; kundli matching uses the birth rashi.
Which rashi does my name letter fall in?
Find the first syllable of your name in the Name letters column. For example, a name starting with रा (Ra) falls in Tula, and one starting with मा (Ma) in Simha.
How many rashis are there?
